Bafana Bafana of South Africa shocked Nigerian Super Eagles with 2-0 in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nation qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.
The Eagles before Saturday were unbeaten under new Manager Genort Rohr, but a below par display on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium saw Bafana Bafana finally recording their first-ever competitive victory over Nigeria.
Nigeria enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the early stages and they created the first clear chance in the 11th minute when Wilfred Ndidi picked up on a loose ball on the edge of the box and sent a left-footed volley off target.
Before Saturday’s game, Nigeria and South Africa have had 12 previous meetings and Bafana Bafana had only won a friendly 13 years ago.
Fully determined to break the trend, the South Africans took the game to Nigeria and were rewarded with two second-half goals that handed them the bragging rights over Nigeria.
After ending it barren in the first half, Tekelo Rantie headed Bafana Bafana in front after 54 minutes when he powered home a cross from the right past goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi.
