Lagos Warns Top Officials Against Haphazard Decisions

Lagos State Government has advised its officers to be cautious of the type of decisions they make, saying that the decisions made by few top government officials are capable of having ripple effects on the totality of all members of the society.

The Commissioner for Establishment, Training and Pensions, Dr. Akintola Benson-Oke gave the warning on Tuesday at a training programme tagged “High Impact Decision Making Programme for Directors in the State Public Service” at GRA, Ikeja.

He warned that decision maker who gives consideration to their personal interest above the interest of the public will always face the problem of distorted judgment that would be contrary to the inclusive mantra of the present administration.

He added that there was a need for process-informed decision-making style that will ensure that decisions are not dictated by emotions or the whims and caprice of the decision makers, stressing that decisions must be consciously made with apt consideration for all necessary parameters.

Giving an instance of informed-decision, Benson-Oke said “For example, when choosing the location of new government office or service centre, it is expected that an officer of the Lagos State Public Service will have regard to criteria that might include rental cost, availability of skilled labour, access to transportation and means of distribution and proximity to customers”.

He noted that at the end of the training programme, Directors in the Lagos State Civil Service would be better equipped to make effective decisions that are rational, informed, and collaborative and thus greatly reducing opportunity costs while building a strong organizational focus.

“The need for senior officers to develop decision-making style that will make the proper implementation of government policies effective and tuned to achieving intended goals can never be over-emphasized”, the Commissioner reiterated.
