As Wayne Rooney is on the move to leave Manchester United, Jose Mourinho is set to name Michael Carrick as new captain for Manchester United.
Rooney, 31, is close to sealing a return to Everton after leaving the club to join United 13 years ago and with his impending exit, Old Trafford boss Mourinho is now set to name Carrick as substantive skipper for next season.
Carrick was United’s stand-in skipper last season as Rooney struggles for games, and although the midfielder also wasn’t first pick last season, but wore the armband whenever he started without Rooney on the pitch.
The 35-year old Carrick has recently signed a one-year extension to his contract at Old Trafford, but given his advancing years, would not be expected to play a lot of the games they will be involved in.
Rooney has been held the Marchester United armband since the summer of 2014.
But according to The Sun, Carrick will now take the reigns with Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera as his No.2.
