Safeguard Partners SFH on Doctors On heels Programme

Safeguard, anti-bacterial soap in partnership with Society for Family Health (SFH) have launched the Safeguard ‘Doctor on Wheels’ program to spread hand washing message across the country.
Dr. Yinka Goodman, Territorial Manager for Society for Family Health (SFH), said hand washing has become the singular most important preventive measure in the control of infection transmitted through the feaco-oral and via droplets.
She said SFH was collaborating with Procter and Gamble, makers of Safeguard, because they know that the battle on control of diarrheal diseases cannot be won alone; remarking that hand washing remains key as treated water and well cooked meals can be contaminated by contaminated hands.
She said countless numbers of childhood death and illnesses could have been prevented, remarking that diarrheal and respiratory illnesses are responsible for high number of hospital visits amongst children.
Goodman noted that the fact remained that we cannot ‘over wash’ our hands, because we go round with our hands and they make contacts daily even beyond what we can think, adding that SFH has carried out a lot of intervention on control of diarrheal diseases especially through purifying drinking water.
P&G’s Brand Integration Operations Manager, Mokutima Ajileye said the Safeguard ‘Doctor on Wheels’ program was aimed at touching and improving consumers’ lives by raising awareness about germs, giving education on the importance of good hygiene practices, and disease prevention through regular hand washing with soap.
She said the carefully designed program would feature hygiene talks, hand washing demonstrations, basic health checks and would enable a qualified medical doctor to have ‘one on one’ interactions with consumers through a mobile medical program to be executed in open markets across Nigeria.
She said Safeguard antibacterial soap is partnering with the SHF to drive community and school-focused program to promote hand washing in the country.
“The partnership is as a result of the strong synergies between the purpose of Safeguard as a brand and SFH’s commitment to take the important message of hand washing with soap across Nigeria. We believe that with this partnership, we can jointly make a bigger impact and positively influence the habits and practices of the general public towards hand washing,” Ajileye said.
She also disclosed that Safeguard would donate more than 100,000 educational booklets to children in schools in different parts of the country because we recognized children are potential ‘change agents.’
P&G’s Communications and Government Relations Leader for Sub-Sahara Africa, Temitope Iluyemi explained that Safeguard had chosen to be at the front line of defence in protecting the health of the family thus fulfilling its purpose of helping people safeguard the ones they love.
“To date, Safeguard has reached over 100 million children with its health and hygiene education around the world.
UNICEF estimates that diarrheal alone kills one child every 30 seconds. These are staggering statistics. These numbers can be drastically reduced with wide dissemination of the information that the timely washing hands with soap can cut diarrheal risk by almost half, and respiratory tract infection by a third. P&G’s Safeguard soap, endorsed by the African Medical Association (AfMA) has antibacterial properties that prevent disease. Unlike ordinary soaps, Safeguard’s unique formulation prevents re-growth of skin germs for up to 12 hours after washing,” Iluyemi said.
