Uhuru Kenyatta Jets Out, To Appear Before ICC In Hague

The Kenyan President, Mr. Uhuru Kenyatta has left Kenya today to attend the Status Conference on his case in Hague.

Mr. Kenyatta who handed over power to his Deputy William Ruto yesterday flew out of the country using a commercial flight

The two-day hearing is due to set a date for his trial to begin.

About 100 MPs accompany him to attend the status conference.

Unlike the past, Kenyatta did not use the Presidential Pavillion after he handed over power to his deputy yesterday.

The status conference on his case will take place tomorrow, just a day after another on Kenya’s cooperation with the International Criminal Court based in Hague.

Uhuru Kenyatta is to attend the conference as a civilian and not President of the Republic of Kenya.

He’s facing charges of crimes against humanity in connection with violence that followed the 2007 elections where more than 1,000 Kenyans were killed.

Meanwhile, his Deputy, who is now the Acting President, William Ruto has promise to remain loyal to Uhuru Kenyatta as the elected president of the country despite holding the fort as Kenyatta attends the ICC status conference.

“I will remain your steadfast and loyal deputy, and will do all I can to honour your faith in me,” Ruto posted on his Facebook page.

Ruto also said he is humbled by the honour and confidence signified by the appointment.

“I will strive to match your excellent standard in serving the people of Kenya,” he added.

The acting president also said he awaits the president’s return, describing the status conference as a “little disruption”.

“I wait eagerly for your return from this little disruption so that you can once again focus on leading us in transforming Kenya,” Ruto concluded.
